A Famous British Plum
Victoria is one of the best-known plum varieties in Britain and remains a firm favourite with gardeners and fruit growers. It is a versatile dual-purpose plum, equally suited to eating fresh when fully ripe and to cooking, baking, jams and preserves. The RHS lists Victoria as a self fertile variety, pollination group C, semi cling stone, with a late August to early September season.
The fruit is large and oval, with attractive reddish-purple skin and juicy yellow flesh. When allowed to ripen properly on the tree, Victoria plums develop a delicious balance of sweetness and gentle acidity.
The History of Victoria Plum
The exact origins of Victoria are not completely certain, but the variety is traditionally associated with Sussex and was introduced commercially by a nurseryman named Denyer of Brixton around 1837 as Denyer's Victoria timing it with the start of Queen Victoria's reign.
Historical records held by the National Fruit Collection describe it as having been found in a garden at Alderton, Sussex, before being sold to Denyer.
By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became a staple of British orchards, and was famously exported and widely grown in places like Sweden by 1844. By World War I, writers noted it was nearly impossible to find another commercial plum variety to match its dominance.
The variety became enormously popular and went on to become one of Britain's best-known plums. Its name is associated with the Victorian era, and the plum has been grown in British gardens and orchards for well over 150 years.
Victoria has remained popular because of its combination of attractive fruit, reliable cropping, excellent flavour and versatility in the kitchen. It has also received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1973.
