A Classic French Variety

Found in the 1850s in Coligny (Ain region) with unknown parentage but "opal" is often assumed, first introduced and sold by Monsieur Massot a nurseryman from the town of Oullins near Lyon.

Massot named the variety after his home town of Oullins, It is also known as Reine Claude d'Oullins, brought to England by Rivers  Nursery prior to 1856.

It quickly became one of Europe's most popular gage varieties thanks to its large, attractive golden fruits, exceptional sweetness, and dependable cropping. Unlike many traditional gages, Oullins Golden Gage is partially self-fertile and is well suited to the UK's climate, making it an excellent choice for both experienced fruit growers and first-time gardeners.

Pollination group 4, semi clingstone.

The fruit is delicious eaten fresh straight from the tree but is equally suited to desserts, jams, preserves, and cooking.
