A Tree with a Fascinating History

Cherry Plum is an ancient European and Asian species native to south-eastern Europe and western Asia. It has been cultivated for centuries for its edible fruit, attractive blossom and usefulness as a fruiting tree.

Botanically known as Prunus cerasifera, it is widely regarded as one of the ancestral species involved in the development of the cultivated plum (Prunus domestica). Its name, cerasifera, means “bearing cherry-like fruits”, referring to the small, rounded fruits that resemble cherries in appearance.

Beautiful Early Blossom and Edible Fruit

One of the Cherry Plum's most distinctive features is its exceptionally early flowering. Its branches become covered in delicate white blossom in late winter or early spring, often before many other fruit trees have begun to flower. This provides an important early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects.

The blossom is followed by small, rounded, cherry-like fruits that can ripen to shades of yellow through to black depending on the tree. The fruits are edible and can be enjoyed when ripe or used to make jams, jellies and other preserves.

Cherry Plum is also valued for its hardiness, attractive spring display and versatility. It can be grown as a productive fruit tree, an ornamental garden tree, hedgerow, or as part of a traditional orchard.
